Choosing a Provider

Finding the right provider is one of the most important decisions you will make.  It is hoped that by using this guide you will make informed and educated choices about your servers.

A Guide for People with Disabilities, Their Families and Others

The Arc of Cumberland County has developed a guide to help people with disabilities, their families and others on selecting a provider of services.  The contents are based on information people with disabilities and families have indicated are important to consider as well as Mental Health Reform and advocates’ concern regarding people making informed and educated choices about their services.

The Guide is not a referral guide and does not provide information about specific providers.  It is meant to be a tool to assist people with disabilities and families in finding quality services to meet their needs.  Quality is measured in part by compliance with the rules and regulations in North Carolina.  Quality is also doing the right thing for the right person at the right time.  Quality does not necessarily look the same for everyone and often people define quality by what is most important to them.

It is recommended that people with disabilities along with their families or others who support them review the questions in the guide before meeting with providers.  They may find it helpful to mark the questions most important to them prior to scheduling an interview with the provider.

The last section of the guide describes how to file a grievance if things are not going well and to report suspected abuse or neglect.
